AI Scoring: Understanding the Magic

How Fovea uses local machine learning to rank and score your photos based on quality and style.

AI Scoring: Understanding the Magic

Fovea’s AI scoring engine is designed to act as your intelligent assistant, helping you navigate thousands of images by identifying the “winners” in seconds. Unlike other tools that rely on cloud processing, Fovea does everything locally on your Mac, ensuring absolute privacy and blistering speed.

How the Scoring Works

When you trigger Auto Cull, Fovea executes a multi-signal analysis pipeline on your images. It doesn’t just look for one thing; it evaluates a combination of technical and aesthetic factors:

1. Technical Precision

The engine assesses the fundamental technical success of the image. It looks for:

  • Micro-Focus: Is the focus exactly where it needs to be?
  • Motion Blur: Did camera shake or subject movement ruin the frame?
  • Exposure Balance: Is the dynamic range utilized effectively, or are highlights and shadows beyond recovery?

2. Aesthetic Composition

Fovea goes beyond “sharpness.” It understands the difference between a sharp, boring photo and a masterpiece. The AI analyzes:

  • Compositional Balance: How elements are arranged within the frame.
  • Subject Prominence: Is the main subject clear and well-separated?
  • Background Harmony: Is the bokeh pleasing, or are there distracting elements?

3. Depth & Scene Analysis

Fovea estimates the 3D structure of your shot. This helps it understand if a blurry background is intentional (bokeh) or an accidental focus miss. By understanding the “depth” of the scene, Fovea can more accurately score portraits and action shots.

The Auto Cull Tiers

Once the analysis is complete, Fovea automatically assigns ratings based on a percentile-based system:

  • 5 Stars (The Selects): The top 5% of the shoot. These are the standout frames that exhibit both technical perfection and high aesthetic value.
  • 4 Stars (The Backups): High-quality shots that are strong contenders but might not have the same “spark” as the 5-star selects.
  • 3 Stars (The Solid Foundation): Good, usable shots that fulfill the technical requirements of the shoot.
  • Rejected/Unrated: Outliers that have significant technical issues (missed focus, eyes closed, extreme blur).

Privacy and Speed

Because we leverage the Apple Neural Engine, all this intelligence happens on your computer.

  • No Uploads: Your photos never leave your machine.
  • Offline Ready: Cull on a plane, in a cafe, or in the middle of a forest.
  • Native Optimization: We use Swift and Metal to ensure that AI analysis doesn’t slow down your preview skimming.

Pro Tip: Trust but Verify

AI scoring is a foundation, not a final decision. We recommend using Auto Cull to do the “heavy lifting” of the first pass, then using Fovea’s ultra-fast Loupe view to do a final human pass on your 4 and 5-star selects.
